Duncan Poulton

December 27, 2016 | Blog, Event, Lokal Stories, Picture interview, Press Release, Reviews, Uncategorized

Duncan Poulton is a British artist working with appropriated digital video and computer-generated imagery. His works observe, deconstruct and reconfigure found online content in order to form new associations between images and their authors’ original context of production. His practice is invested in the knowing misapplication of established techniques and formal strategies, the productive misinterpretation of existing cultural content. Though each work is discrete and contained within an internal logic, all share a concern with mythology, art history and the peculiarities of an increasingly virtual world.

I was born here, but studied and spent most of my life in Frankfurt, Germany. To make a new illustration, first, I mope around a bit and dread that it's going to turn out really bad. Then I trawl through the internet and save a load of stuff on Pinterest, to try and get myself excited about what I could draw. Then I draw it. That involves tracing different parts of a sketch onto different sheets of paper, and a ridiculous number of Photoshop layers. How I feel then depends on what podcasts I'm listening to!

"I create my work using the medium of painting. My work speaks on the free association and intuitive mind of daily memories. My work is an expression and the memory of behaviour and personal feeling of anxiety about the perception of material reality, fantasy and human transformation. Inspire by doodle, lines, images, impression of forms, shapes, colours and environments that I have seen. By creating an expression of lines, streaks, imagination as a metaphor to convey something, I expect these works to build the perception of reality and self visual traces that constantly change. Which can be meaningful to me personally and others."
